Hello! I’m back!
Thank you all for the courtesy and grace for the month-long break I took from my (mostly) weekly Substack. In that time, I finished and submitted the proposal for my second book (WOOHOO!), did several speaking engagements including some keynote sessions for Bridge of Hope National, dreamed some new dreams for the near and distant future, and made major headway on the secret winter project that I’ve been teasing for a while.
And speaking of that… I’m finally ready to reveal that secret project to you!
DRUMROLL! TRUMPETS! CONFETTI!!!
“Advent is a Homecoming: Meditations on Incarnation, Homelessness, and Everything Else” will release digitally as a PDF just before Advent. It’s a multimedia collaborative project between myself and my friend Izzy McLaughlin—think of it as a cross between an advent devotional and a zine. It will feature essays and art guiding you week by week through the Advent season. It can be used individually, as families, in small groups, or however you want.

This is just a small preview of the amazing art that will be throughout. I’m really excited about my written contributions too—it’s like nothing I’ve really written before. While all of the essays will talk about homelessness in some way, they are not about homelessness. They’re about all of us, our whole lives, our shared lives—everything that is sacred. You may learn a new thing or two about homelessness while reading it, but my hope is that you’ll learn a lot more about yourself. My greatest blessing working with and amongst people who experience homelessness has been how my own spirituality and life has been transformed. “Advent is a Homecoming” hopes to share some of that with you, too.
We don’t have an official release date yet, but “Advent is a Homecoming” will be available as a digital PDF, which you can then print if you are so inclined. I’m still working out the logistics, but it will be available as a “Pay What You Want” purchase, with all of the proceeds going to direct service/aid work with unhoused people. There will also be a way to access it if you’re not able to pay anything at this time.
I can’t even tell you how excited I am to share this with you. If you’re looking forward to this, please let me know in the comments! It will help us get over the last creative hurdles before the finish line.
In addition to finishing and launching this, I have a lot of great topics for newsletters in the coming weeks. And before too long, I hope to have some news about Book 2! So stay tuned, and thanks again for sticking around for the hiatus.
These posts will always be free.
But the rest of my work—traveling to speak and lead workshops, creating content, advocacy and direct aid—is enabled and expanded by your support. Consider becoming a Paid subscriber to enhance my reach.
Have just been considering something for Advent this year. This sounds perfect.
I am looking forward to Advent is a Homecoming! It sounds wonderful. I like Izzy's artwork which will make it even more special!
