As someone who wrote a book that costs $19 that I regularly ask people to buy, I probably shouldn’t tell you that the best thing I ever wrote is out there for free. But then, I’ve never done this stuff exactly how I’m supposed to.
It was 2021, and I was in the middle of writing my book. The raid on Echo Park Lake had just taken place, and we all had a sense that it was a pivotal moment. I was asked by Nations Media to write about what happened, and had lots of freedom to create the piece. More than that, it was a situation that was unfolding as I was writing about it. The piece morphed and changed along with the situation on the ground, and by the time I finished writing it, I was completely changed. And my book would be too.
Since most of you didn’t know me back then, this piece will be new to you. But even if you’ve read it before, it is worth reading again. Echo Park was a practice run for what has become a well-worn playbook, and we should familiarize ourselves with its implementation—and its resistance.

just a heads up that the link in the piece doesn't seem to be working! I found it here though: https://www.togetherla.net/blogs/echo-park-lake-imagining-new-communities-with-the-unhoused
